The Difference Between Conservative Blacks and Liberal Blacks
I was raised in a Democrat household during the turbulent 60s and 70s. As a youngster, I knew nothing of political parties. However, my parents managed to instill conservative principles within me that, as I grew older, eventually caused me to rethink my affiliation with the Democrat Party.
The more I thought about it, the more I came to realize that I had nothing in common with the Democrat Party, and I eventually left! However, for the next three (3) decades, I had no political home. I absolutely could not return to the Democrat Party, every minor political party that I investigated left much to be desired, and the Republican Party was composed of a bunch of old, white racists…weren’t they?
At least…that’s what I had been led to believe!
With that as a backdrop, I want to relate something that I have come to know about one of the important differences between liberal blacks and conservative blacks.
Racism In My Youth
My first recollection of racism occurred when I was about 9 years old and living in Philadelphia, PA. Amazingly, I didn’t even recognize it at the time.
My older brother, a couple of friends, and I were returning home from a day at the park (walking) and decided to stop for ice-cream at a drug store (in those days, virtually all drug stores had a soda and ice-cream fountain). We walked in and took seats at the counter and waited to be served. There were only a few patrons, and the woman behind the counter did not look busy, at all. Despite that, we waited several minutes, and no one seemed eager to help us. My older brother finally asked for service, and I will never forget the response from the clerk: “We don’t serve your kind here.”
In my ignorance, I thought she meant that they didn’t serve KIDS there! However, when we told our parents about it, we were warned to never return to that store. We were told that the reason the clerk said what she said was that we were black. My takeaway from that was that white people did not like black people.
The True Source of the Racism
Over the next several years, I came to experience additional incidents of racism from time to time. However, occasionally, I would meet some whites who appeared to be different and accepted me as an equal. Although I wondered what the difference was, I didn’t really dwell on it.
Years later, when I had begun to pay more attention to politics, I learned that many of those who exhibited racist tendencies toward me were Democrats. I could only be certain of those who made it known who they supported in elections, so I cannot honestly state that all were Democrats, but I now began to take mental notes.
I also noticed that many blacks spoke disparagingly about all whites. Not exactly sure what to make of this phenomenon, but I knew that what was being talked about was not universally true. By this time, I was aware that virtually all blacks that I knew voted almost 100% for Democrats.
I Snuck Off the Democratic Plantation
This was about the time that Jimmy Carter was POTUS. In his race against Reagan, I had voted for Reagan but kept it a closely-guarded secret. I didn’t exactly know why, but I surmised that it was probably in my best interest to do so since Reagan belonged to that racist, dastardly Republican Party. Even so, I sensed that he, himself, was a decent, honorable man.
I was very confused about all of this and decided that the best cure for confusion was knowledge. Thus, I began a thorough search for the truth. Slowly (no internet in those days), I unearthed one nugget of truth after another and was dumbfounded at what I discovered.
Imagine my surprise to learn that it was not ALL WHITES who condoned and perpetuated the vile and horrific condition of slavery on blacks in America…it was white DEMOCRATS!
The KKK, lynchings, intimidation, Jim Crow, Black Codes, and other such evils were not “racist” Republican constructs…they were tools of the Democratic Party designed to keep the newly-freed black slaves from voting for Republican candidates.
However, the more I learned, the more difficult it became to accept the truth. If all this was true, why did blacks vote for Democrats at all? It took a while, but I eventually learned about how the Democratic Party duped blacks into trading the old plantations of slavery for a new plantation of slavery by using handouts to accomplish their goal. It was immensely successful and persists to this day.
The Tea Party
But then, something remarkable happened. A gentleman by the name of Rick Santelli became fed up with out-of-control government spending and went on a rant on the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange in February 2009. He became the catalyst for the American Tea Party phenomenon that swept the nation almost immediately thereafter. I agreed with everything he had said and later joined the newly-formed First Coast Tea Party of Jacksonville Florida.
In the Tea Party, I met and/or came to know thousands of like-minded individuals, who like me, realized that our nation was in trouble. Over the next several years, I was a very active Tea Party member who participated in rallies, fundraisers, education of the membership, and more. I even became a regular speaker at local Tea Party gatherings…invited by Billie Tucker (founder) and other Tea Party organizers.
Then came one of the biggest shocks of my entire life:
MOST OF THESE TEA PARTY PEOPLE…WERE REPUBLICANS!
White Republicans, Black Republicans, Hispanic/Latino Republicans, (legal) Immigrant Republicans, Men, Women…you name it! All Republicans…with a smattering of Independents, and even a few Democrats.
Talk about CONFUSION on an almost cosmic scale!
But as I came to know these people, I discovered something else. The Black Republicans that I met seemed different from Black Democrats. Most of the Black Democrats almost always spoke negatively about all Whites, irrespective of party affiliation and seemed to be exceedingly concerned about racism and complained incessantly about being the target of racism. None of the Black Republicans did so. I found this to be stunning! What was the important difference that I alluded to earlier? It took a while, but I believe I have finally discovered the reason.
- Black Democrats shun Republicans and interact mostly with other Democrats.
- Since the Democrat Party is the party of racism and slavery, it stands to reason that much of the racism experienced by Black Democrats comes from Whites in their own party.
- Black Republicans interact mostly with other Republicans of all colors.
- Since the Republican Party is the party of freedom…well…you do the math!
Here is the bottom line: Black liberals are the ones complaining about racism and being called the N-word. Blacks who are conservatives RARELY initiate complaints or concerns about it.
The reason I am so confident that this is true is that in the last 11 years (since joining the Republican Party), I have not experienced any racism from another Republican at all!
I challenge any Black Democrat to make the same claim!
